It's Peak Pest Season. Why Is Your Phone Quiet?

Right now, somewhere in your service area, a homeowner just found a trail of ants marching across her kitchen counter. She did not check the fridge for a magnet. She did not dig through a drawer for a business card. She pulled out her phone and typed "pest control near me."

If you did not show up in that search, you did not lose a lead. You never existed.

That is the brutal math of pest control marketing. July through September is when San Diego, Riverside County, and the Coachella Valley light up with ants, roaches, spiders, and everything the heat drags out of the ground. Search volume for pest control peaks right now. If your phone is quiet during the busiest search season of the year, the problem is not demand. The problem is that Google is handing your customers to someone else.

Nobody Plans Pest Control

Here is what makes your trade different from a remodeler or a solar company: nobody researches you for three weeks. Nobody compares five quotes on a spreadsheet.

They see a roach. They panic. They search. They call whoever shows up first and answers the phone.

That whole decision happens in about four minutes, and almost all of it happens inside the Google Maps 3-pack. The three companies in that box get the calls. Everyone below it splits the scraps.

So the only question that matters is: are you in the box?

Why You're Not Showing Up

If your competitors are eating your lunch on Google Maps, it almost always comes down to a handful of fixable problems:

Your Google Business Profile is half finished. Wrong primary category, no services listed, no photos of your trucks or techs, business description written in 2019 and never touched again. Google rewards complete, active profiles. A skeleton profile reads as a skeleton business.

You're getting outreviewed. If you have 23 reviews and the company in the 3-pack has 340, that gap is doing more damage than anything else on this list. Review count and recency are two of the strongest ranking signals in local search, and they are also what the panicked homeowner uses to pick who to call.

You have one page trying to rank in twelve cities. If you serve Escondido, Temecula, Palm Desert, and everywhere in between, but your website is a single homepage, Google has no reason to show you in any of those cities. Location pages are how a local company ranks across a real service area.

Your name, address, and phone number don't match across the internet. Old Yelp listing with a dead number. A directory with your previous address. Every mismatch chips away at Google's confidence in your business.

None of this is exotic. It is unglamorous, checklist-level work. Which is exactly why most pest control companies never do it, and exactly why the ones that do sit in the 3-pack all summer.

What Fixing It Actually Looks Like

Rebuild the Google Business Profile completely. Right primary category, every service listed with a real description, fresh photos monthly, and posts that show Google the business is alive.

Turn reviews into a system, not a favor. Your techs finish a job, the customer gets a text with a direct review link before the truck leaves the driveway. No begging, no awkward asks. Volume and recency compound fast when it runs automatically.

Build a page for every city you serve. Real pages with real content about pest problems in that specific area. Ants in Chula Vista are a different conversation than scorpions in Indio.

Answer every call, even the ones you miss. Peak season means you are in a crawlspace when half your calls come in. A missed-call text-back fires an automatic text within seconds, before that homeowner dials the next company on the list. In a four-minute decision window, that text is often the whole ballgame.

The Season Won't Wait

Here is the part that stings: local SEO is not instant. The work you do on your profile, reviews, and location pages this month starts paying off over the following weeks and compounds from there. Every week you wait is another week of peak season calls going to the company that started sooner.

Your competitors in the 3-pack are not better exterminators than you. They just fixed their Google presence first.
